The Berguedà-based company reinforces its industrial activity with the launch of a new cross-laminated timber (CLT) plant in Puig-reig, a project that combines technology, sustainability and added value to drive the forest industry of the future.
With more than fifty years of history, Boix is today one of the five largest sawmills in Spain and a benchmark in sustainable forest management and timber transformation in Catalonia.
Since its beginnings as a family-owned company in the Berguedà region, the group has evolved into a key player in the Catalan bioeconomy, with an industrial capacity of up to 250,000 tonnes per year and a workforce of more than 120 employees.
Its strategy—based on circularity, innovation and proximity—has made it possible to close the wood value chain: from forest management to the full transformation of the log into value-added products for industry, packaging and sustainable construction.
A €40 million investment to consolidate industrial leadership
The new cross-laminated timber (CLT) plant, located in Puig-reig and now fully operational, represents an industrial investment of €40 million and an unprecedented technological leap in the engineered timber sector in Catalonia.
With 13,000 m² of facilities, the plant incorporates state-of-the-art technology and fully digitalised processes that maximise the use of local forest resources and produce high-performance solutions for sustainable construction.
“Our goal is not only to manufacture products, but to create value from the forest, with a vision that connects territory, industry and sustainability. At Boix we have moved from a primary sector model to a modern and responsible industry that turns a natural resource into a future opportunity for the country,” says Carles Martí, General Manager of Boix.
Environmental commitment and technological innovation
Grup Boix is also strengthening its commitment to sustainability with a new 5 MW biomass boiler equipped with a next-generation electrofilter that reduces emissions by half compared to previous models and ensures compliance with the environmental goals set by the 2030 Agenda.
Similarly, the automated pallet production line—one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula—has already reached its maximum production capacity, consolidating the group’s leadership in this segment.
With an annual output of 185,000 tonnes of roundwood and 85,000 m³ of sawn timber, the industrial group headquartered in Puig-reig combines experience, technology and territorial commitment. The company operates under PEFC and CatForest certifications, which guarantee traceability and responsible management of natural resources.
The forest as an industrial and social driver
For Boix, wood is not merely a resource but a tool for economic, environmental and social transformation. As its General Manager explains, “the wood that comes from our forests is an asset for the country: it enables better land management, reduces wildfire risk, and generates skilled employment. We have forests with surplus growth, a prepared industry, and a society demanding sustainable materials—now is the moment to connect it all.”
Rooted in the Berguedà region but with a European outlook, Grup Boix aims to continue boosting the forest bioeconomy as a driver of development and added value. With increasingly efficient, mechanised and digitalised processes, the group looks to the future with a clear purpose: to transform the forest into opportunity and sustainability.
